Today we welcomed students from the University College London to our Institute.

Today the Pilsudski Institute in London hosted students from UCL, who had the chance to see some of the most interesting items from our archives and museum. During their visit, they heard about the long and difficult journey of Poland and the Polish people towards independence. They also learned about our patron, Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, and his brother, Bronislaw Pilsudski. It was also a great opportunity to show a hologram of the Enigma code machine, as well as the desk and office of Ryszard Kaczorowski, the sixth President of Poland in exile.

We were very pleased to present some unique exhibits, including Marshal Pilsudski’s school certificate and even his moustache, which was kept by his barber and arranged in the shape of the Polish eagle. Students could also see the original typescript of Melchior Wankowicz’s The Battle of Monte Cassino, as well as a diary written by a nurse working in a military hospital in Kraków, where wounded soldiers were treated.

Another highlight was the presentation of our “Exhibit of the Month” - a first aid kit donated by the Polish Aid Society. The students were especially interested in old maps of Poland from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as in the collections of the Institute’s library. We would like to thank the UCL students for their visit and their interest, and we warmly invite them to visit us again and to continue our cooperation.
